Things to do

The Capertee Valley is also one of Australia’s most famous locations for bird watching. The Valley has an enormous diversity of bird life and with drier ironbark-box woodlands nearby many species are unique to the area.

Without even venturing into the wilderness area over 120 different species have been spotted on Longridge. These include; Doublebars, Rufus Songlarks, Jacky Winters, Restless Flycathers, Rainbow Bee-eaters, Diamond Firetails, Plum Headed Finches, Scarlet Honeyeaters, Regent Honeyeaters, Red Wattlebirds, Noisy Friarbirds, Brown Treecreepers and Wedgetail Eagles.

The Retreat's central location also affords the traveller a comfortable base from which to explore the Central Tablelands; be it the World Heritage Wilderness Area, the wineries of Mudgee, the car racing at Bathurst, the goldfield town of Sofala or the Zig Zag Railway, just to name a few.
